Care-givers work as a team under the responsibility of and in collaboration with a nurse. Care-givers help provide care for healthy or sick adults, or those with disabilities, in various organisations. They work in hospitals or clinics, retirement homes, for home care providers and in specialist care organisations for adults with disabilities or chronic health conditions.

    Entrance examination eligibility

    • At least 17 years old when training starts
    • No prior qualification is required to sit the written eligibility exam

    Conditions for registration

    The following are exempt from the written exam:

    • Candidates holding a French certificate or diploma, at minimum at level IV (Find out more about diploma levels)
    • Candidates holding a French certificate or diploma in the healthcare or social sector, at minimum at level V (Find out more about diploma levels)
    • Candidates holding a certificate or diploma from their home country allowing direct access to university-level education in the country in which the certificate/diploma was awarded  
    • Students nurses who completed their first year of study in France and did not enter second year
    • Candidates holding a vocational French school leaver's certificate or who are in "terminale" (year 13) studying ASSP (Accompagnement, soins et services à la personne – support and care services) or SAPAT (Services aux personnes et aux territoires – social services in rural areas) who must choose between two selection processes (full course or part-time course) when registering (subject to being awarded the leaver's certificate)
    • Candidates holding one of the following diplomas who have been employed in the profession relating to the diploma for over six months:
    1. Childcare assistant diploma
    2. Paramedic diploma
    3. Social living assistant diploma or home assistant diploma with distinction
    4. Personal care assistant diploma
    5. Professional family life assistant certificate

    Exams

    Full-time course

      1. A written eligibility exam , lasting for two hours and composed of two parts:

    • Candidates must extract the main points from a topical text about the general culture within the healthcare and social sector and comment on the most important aspects, basing their answer around two questions (12 points)
    • A set of 10 questions that require short answers (8 points): Five questions on the basic elements of human biology, three questions involving the four basic arithmetic operations and two questions based on converting units

    Candidates must achieve at least 10/20 to pass. Those candidates who are admitted must complete the course in its entirety and are not eligible for the exemptions as stated in the decree dated 21 May 2014.

         2. An oral entrance exam lasting for 20 minutes in front of a 2-person panel, with 10 minutes of preparation time beforehand . This consists of giving a presentation on a topic relating to the healthcare and social care sector and a discussion with the panel about the candidate's existing knowledge of and interest in working as a care-giver

    Length of the training

    10 months, alternating between classes and placements

    Structure

    • 8 training modules:

    - Module 1: Providing support in daily life – 4 weeks

    - Module 2: The clinical condition of a person – 2 weeks

    - Module 3: Care work – 5 weeks

    - Module 4: Ergonomics – 1 week

    - Module 5: Communication and relationships – 2 weeks

    - Module 6: Hygiene of the premises – 1 week

    - Module 7: Passing on information – 1 week

    - Module 8: Structure of the work – 1 week 

    • 6 placements, with at least one in each of the following sectors : Short-term services : surgery, healthcare etc. - Medium or long-term services : elderly people or people with disabilities, mental health or psychiatric services, services offered by community health centres

    For those holding a French school leaver's certificate in ASSP (Accompagnement, soins et services à la personne – support and care services)
    • Training unit 2 : 2-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module
    • Training unit 5: 2-week module
    • 3 placements: 12 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a French school leaver's certificate in SAPAT (Services aux personnes et aux territoires)
    • Training unit 6: 1-week module
    • Training unit 2 : 2-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module
    • Training unit 5: 2-week module
    • 3 placements: 14 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a diploma as a childcare assistant :
    • Training unit 1 : 4-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module
    • 2 placements: 12 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a diploma as a paramedic :
    • Training unit 1 : 4-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module
    • Training unit 6 : 1-week module
    • Training unit 8 : 1-week module
    • 4 placements: 14 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a diploma as a social living assistant or home assistant (with distinction) :
    • Training unit 2 : 2-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module
    • Training unit 6 : 1-week module
    • Training unit 8 : 1-week module
    • 4 placements: 14 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a diploma as a personal care assistant :
    • Training unit 2 : 2-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module

    • 4 placements: 14 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services
    For those holding a certification as a professional family life assistant :
    • Training unit 2 : 2-week module
    • Training unit 3 : 5-week module

    • Training unit 7 : 1-week module
    • Training unit 8 : 1-week module
    • 4 placements: 14 weeks in healthcare, social or medical-social services

    Training costs : Care-giver

    In 2018/2019

    • Training organised by the regional council (click here for the conditions)
    • Costs for independent applicants: €4,679  (click here for the conditions)
    • Registration fee: €100, which shall remain the property of IFAS (institut de formation pour les aides-soignants – training institute for care-givers) in case of withdrawal from or abandonment of the course.

    Part-time course

    If you are not receiving any financial help from your employer or any other funding body, in 2018-2019 you must pay an annual training fee, amounting to €2,514 for those holding a French school leaver's certificate in ASSP (Accompagnement, soins et services à la personne – support and care services) and €2,838 for those holding a French school leaver's in SAPAT (Services aux personnes et aux territoires – social services in rural areas).

    For those who are not receiving any financial help :
    • €189 per week of classes
    • €67 per week of placement
